Mariners 8, Joes 5
Grand Lake broke open a tight game with a five-run ninth inning and held on through a messy bottom half to beat Hamilton 8–5 on Saturday night at Foundation Field.
Early edge for the Mariners
Grand Lake struck first in the top of the first, manufacturing two runs without a hit in the scoring plays. Matthew Hutchinson's RBI groundout brought home Matthew Aldridge for a 1–0 lead, and Huston Dunn followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Parker Vaughn and make it 2–0.
Hamilton answered in the second. Brady Bowen lined an RBI single to cut it to 2–1, then the Joes tied it on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Vaughn delivers the go-ahead hit
The game stayed even until the fifth, when Parker Vaughn doubled to drive in a run and put Grand Lake back in front, 3–2. From there, Mariners pitching largely controlled the night—Hamilton managed only three hits total and struck out 12 times.
Ninth-inning eruption flips the game
Grand Lake turned a one-run game into a rout in the ninth, scoring five times to stretch the lead to 8–2. Aldridge started the rally with an RBI double, Luke Wildes added an RBI single (with the run scoring unearned), Dunn brought home another on his second sacrifice fly of the night, and Brandt Kendall capped the outburst with a two-run single.
In the inning, Hamilton reliever Jeffrey Levin was tagged for five runs (four earned) on four hits.
Hamilton's late push falls short
Hamilton made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs despite recording only one hit in the inning. Bowen drew an RBI walk, and two more runs came home on a sequence of wild pitches/passed balls and another walk. The Joes ultimately left the tying run out of reach, with Elias Alvarado closing the door for the Mariners to earn the save.
